When Scranton voters elected councilman Randy Winkelman as mayor, that created a vacancy on the city council. Winkelman was sworn into the mayor’s position following the official canvass of votes in mid-November.
Last week the city published a legal notice advising residents of the intention to appoint a resident to fill the vacancy on the council. Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest to the Scranton city council by filing it at the Scranton city hall.
The council expects to make the appointment at its regular meeting on Jan. 7. The appointee will serve until the next regular city election in 2017.
Residents have the right to call for a special election but city officials hope to be spared the expense through an appointment. ~The Scranton Journal
